Ofek, Abraham Naissance - mort : 1935-1990 Nationalité : Bulgarian then Israeli
Born in Bulgaria, he immigrated to Israel in 1949.Abraham Ofek's artistic credo saw the imprinting of social values on the work of art as a moral mission. He simplified content in order to convey a direct and clear message in expressionistic monumental wall paintings inspired by South American and especially by Mexican murals. Abraham Ofek's preoccupation with social content yielded saga-like representations of unfolding Israeli reality: immigration, settlement, and the building of a new life in the resurrected homeland. Abraham Ofek, like his colleague Naftali Bezem, with whom he worked in close communion during the early years, saw the large walls of public buildings as a forum for visual communication of national ideas. The churches and the Arab buildings in Abraham's Ofek's landscapes are typical features of his depictions of Jerusalem scenery. He also executed several murals in Jerusalem in the 1970s having the migration of the Jews and their return to Zion, the mother figure as a central theme and the joy of salvation as the culmination for the return to the Promised Land.
