In 1987, he went to Austria and worked in Berlin in 1989 before settling in New York in 1992. Kabakov participated in many exhibitions in the Soviet Union and abroad showing his works and installations. He illustrated over 100 books during twenty years and produced works in which he instilled much humour and derision. A noted avant-garde artist in Moscow, Kabakov was much influenced by Cezanne and Abstract Expressionist artists and produced a series of monochrome works on which he glued usual objects. He then went on to create extraordinary installations relating to urban environment with the help of images and texts.
