Bacon, Yehuda

Painter and graphic artist. Bacon was detained at thirteen in Theresienstadt with his father. He produced works there after receiving lessons from Leo Haas, Otto Ungar and Karel Fleischmann who were detained with him. Only about 100 of the 13,000 children sent to Theresienstadt survived. In December 1943, Yehuda Bacon was transferred to Auschwitz, where his father died while he survived the Holocaust and immigrated to Palestine after the war. He then studied at the Bezalel Academy of Jerusalem before teaching there. Bacon exhibited his works in Israel, Europe and the U.S while some of his post-war drawings notably served as evidence in the trial of Adolf Eichmann.

Bagel, Moses Bahelfer called Bagel

Born in Wilno, Bagel was linked at 17 to the “Jung Wilno” group of Jewish artists. He then studied art in Munich with Klee and Kandinsky at the Bauhaus School between 1928 and 1932 before settling in 1933 in Paris, where he produced decors for the Paris Yiddish Theatre and illustrated books. During the war, Bagel sought refuge in Toulouse and produced false identity papers for the French resistance movement. Back in Paris in 1945, he worked for several Yiddish periodicals and produced a series of paintings commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sholem Aleichem's birth date.

Baitler, Zoma

Baitler studied at the School of Decorative Arts of Kovno between 1922 and 1927. Working as an Impressionist artist, he then went to Uruguay and settled there permanently. He founded a studio in 1933 and worked under the influence of Joaquin Torres-Garcia. Baitler visited Europe and Israel in 1953 and exhibited his works in Barcelona and Venice in 1948 and 1960.
Baizerman, Saul

Born in Vitebsk, Chagall's hometown, Baizerman was first employed as a model at the Academy of Fine Art of Odessa. He then went to the U.S in 1910 and studied sculpture in New York. He came to France after his wedding and then visited Italy and London, where his first exhibition took place in 1924. Baizerman exhibited his works, mainly bronze relief pieces depicting monumental nudes, regularly in New York from 1933 and had a retrospective exhibition held in 1958 at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Nearly all his earlier work before 1931 was destroyed by fire.
