Born in 1931) Nationality: German Activity: Painter and sculptor Average rate: Between $ 5,000 and 18,000 Heinz Mack studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf from 1950 to 1953 as well as philosophy in Cologne until 1956. He exhibited his works for the first time in Düsseldorf in 1957 and received the Art Prize from the town of Krefeld the following year. He then founded the «Zero» review with Otto Piene. «Zero» was also the name of the group Mack, Piene and Ucker set up in 1962, which tried to break up with classic abstract currents in order to take advantage of new techniques and the play of light with the use of aluminium or plastic elements. The group notably professed the ideas of Manzoni and Yves Klein and Mack took part in many exhibitions of luminous-Kinetic art, notably in Düsseldorf in 1958, in Antwerp and in Mannheim in 1959, in Leverkusen and in Paris in 1960, in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Arnhem, Antwerp, Bern and Geneva in 1962, in Kassel in 1964 and in Amsterdam and Paris in 1965. Mack also took part in several one-man exhibitions in Italy, in Antwerp, in London, in Basel and in New York. He notably tried to develop the «Other unlimited space» concept through the «Sahara» project, which consisted in animating the desert and the sea with giant projectors. Most of the titles given to his works reflect the concept of nature such as «Cube of Light», «relief of Light», « Small forest of light» or «Pyramid of Light». Mack, who received the first prize of the Paris Biennial in 1965, is considered as one of the most interesting artists who fully invested themselves in the kinetic techniques while rejecting the representation of Abstract Expressionism.
