GRIS JUAN
PSEUDO OF GONZALES JOSE VICTORIANO
(1887-1927)
Nationality: Spanish
Activity: Painter, Illustrator and sculptor
Average price rate: Between US $ 100,000 and 4 million

Born in Madrid, Juan Gris started to produce drawings at a very young age before studying at the escuela de Artes Manufacturas in view of becoming an engineer. He however deserted that school in 1904 preferring to embark on a career as a painter.

He first earned his living as an illustrator for many dailies and periodicals while studying painting with an academic painter. Gathering his meagre resources and with the help of his sister he decided to go to Paris in 1906 and rented a studio at the famed “Bateau-Lavoir” where he met and befriended Picasso.

"Carafe, verre et compotier", oil on canvas 45x55 cm, 1918

Gris continued to produced satircal drawings for periodicals such as “L'Assiette au Beurre”, “Le Charivari” or “Le Cri de Paris” but was soon affected by illness and always lived as a poor man at least until the last two years of his existence.
