CIGNANI CARLO

CIGNANI CARLO
(1628-1719) Nationality: Italian Activity: Painter Price range: Between $ 20,000 and 70,000

Born to a noble family in Bologna, he started to draw copying Old Masters in the collection of his father. His first master was Giambattista Cairo and then became the pupil and later assistant of Francesco Albani whose manner he adopted.

Cignani was however influenced by Correggio, Guido Reni and the Caracci brothers.

He always paid great attention to his works and spent twenty years producing his main fresco, the Assumption of the Virgin figuring Paradise, on the Forli Dome.

Cignani painted many religious and mythological paintings, which are now in several Italian institutions and churches, his main masterpieces being in Bologna, notably four oval works in the San Michele in Bosco building and in the main room of the Public Palace.

Cignani painted for King Louis 14th of France a Descent from the Cross and a work titled «Christ in the Garden of the Olive Trees»
