Denis Mahon, the Art historian, has donated part of his collection of Italian old masters to the National Art Collections Fund. A total of 61 paintings, worth some 40 million dollars, will be given to several museums, including the National Gallery of London, the National Gallery of Dublin and other institutions in Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds, Birmingham or Liverpool. These masterpieces, due to be exhibited at the London National Gallery at the end of February, are notably signed by such artists as Guerchino, Annibal Carrachi, Pietro da Cortone,Guido Reni and Luca Giordano. Among the 61 pictures, five will be given to the National Gallery of Ireland and seven to the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna in Italy while the National Gallery in London is believed to become the recipient of 18 major works. A specialist in Italian baroque paintings of the 17th Century, Denis Mahon is now aged 86.
