Seeking to acquire their own taste of Rothschild, bidders competed on July 8th 1999 for  a famous collection of paintings, furniture and ornaments stolen by  the Nazis in World  War II and only recently returned to  their rightful owners. The treasures of the Rothschild family fetched more than double their expected prices, with the Christie's sale earning a total of US $ 90.7 million, the biggest auction ever held in  Europe.
