Umberto Mastroiani , considered as one of the greatest Italian modern artists died on February 25th 1998 in Marino, near Rome. Chiefly known as a sculptor Mastroianni, who was born in 1910, used to carve thick marbles and was regarded as the successor of Boccioni. The Venice biennale organised a retrospective exhibition of his works in 1940.
He then moved away from Futurism and worked in an Expressionist abstract manner and after the war he executed momuments gloryfying the antifascist resistance fighters, notably in Turin from where his family originated. In 1987, the artists donated 27 monumental works to the State which are now exhibited in a vast room in the Museum of Modern Art in Rome.
