SPIDERMAN JAILED
01 January 1999

A thief who used his remarkable climbing abilities to snatch paintings and art objects from private homes, was arrested in Paris on January 13th 1999.
The man, who was probably an admirer of Spiderman, was wearing the attires of a ninja to climb the walls of buildings in some plush Parisian areas.
Aged 31, the thief, named as Vjeran T. by police, was using a mini catapult to launch a hook on a roof in order to reach his targets at night.

Breaking into flats he thus used to grab many paintings, jewels and silver. His last feat occurred on January 6th when he got hold of two valuable paintings by Bernard Buffet as well as a pastel by Camille Pissarro which he stole in the flat of a French law professor who was asleep in his bedroom.

The thief was arrested by police following a tipp-off from some Paris antique dealers to whom he was trying to sell part of his hoard. Police found in his home 13 18th and 19th Century paintings stolen between 1992 and early 1999. They also found several art index books which enabled him to know the value of what he was stealing.
