NEW GETTY MUSEUM
01 December 1997

The Getty Museum opened its new premises on the Brentwood hills overlooking Los Angeles on December 16th 1997.
The Getty Trust spent one billion dollars to regroup its six institutions in a 37,000 square metre compound due to receive 1,5 million visitors a year.

The extraordinary collections of the museum have now been housed in the new Getty Center while the Roman-like villa of Malibu where these were shown previously will be restored and devoted exclusively to Archaeology.

The various Getty institutions such as the Conservation Institute, the Research Institute for the History of Arts and the Humanities, will be regrouped alongside the museum in the six buildings designed by German architect Richard Meier.
Over the past ten years the Getty Trust spent some US $ 770 millions in new acquisitions and such amount made it the major actor on the art market. Barry Munitz, its new head, promised the Trust would continue to spend as much money in the coming years to enrich its collections.
The trust will also put the emphasis on partnership operations with other museums and on new technologies, notably the Internet and the production of compact disks and video tapes.
