SOTHEBY'S SALE OF SILVER : A SUCCESS
01 March 1999

Sotheby's sale of major silver pieces from the collection of Lord Rosebery on February 11th 1999 was a major success.

The sale realised £ 4,63 million (US $ 7.58 million) for the pieces which had been collected by Baron Meyer de Rothschild and his daughter Hannah. These were not included in the famous Mentmore sale of 1974.Several big dealers from Britain, the U.S, the Netherlands and Germany packed in the salesroom among them S.J Phillips and Jonathan and Nicholas Norton who acquired 20 of the 80 pieces of silver.

Quality was there as certain prices suggested. An impressive silver-gilt drinking cup in the form of a lion offered by King William III to Emmanuel Jenner from Bern fetched £ 507,500 (US $ 817,000) while a pair of partially gilt chandeliers by Wolfgang Jun II from Augsbourg (circa 1680) went for £ 48,800 (US $ 78,500) and a pair of silver gilt beer pots produced around 1602 sold for £ 551,000 (US $ 887,000) to Partridge Fine Art.
