A fraction of the art collection formed by French actress Jacqueline Delubac who was the third wife of French writer and film-maker Sacha Guitry in whose films she appeared frequently will be sold at Drouot, Paris, on March 16th and 21st 1998. Jacqueline Delubac, an elegant woman, died at 87 on October 14th 1997 after being run down by a cyclist while shopping in the plush faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. Her film career lasted until the early 1950's and from then on she devoted her passion to painting and fashion. She had fine tastes as suggested by her collection of paintings and furniture which she bought with her last husband Mirant Eknayan, a rich Armenian diamond dealer who himself owned a great collection of paintings by Renoir, Corot, Manet or Gauguin. A large part of the Delubac collection was donated to the Lyons museum of Fine Arts in 1994. The rest, which went to her heirs, will partly be sold at auction at Drouot-Montaigne in order to pay succession duties.
A superb oil painting by Kees van Dongen showing a naked woman painted in 1908 is expected to fetch at least US $ 650,000 while a self-portrait by Marie Laurencin carries an estimate of US $ 85,000. Bronzes by Rodin (Iris torso) and by Germaine Richier are also included in this sale. Among modern paintings, the head of a hostage by Fautrier is estimated $ 85,000 and «The Town», an oil painting by Vieira da Silva $ 60,000.
Jacqueline Delubac had a passion for modern paintings and also for furniture. A rosewood and amarant Secrétaire with rich bronze fittings by Montigny, circa 1770, is estimated US $ 160,000 while four Louis XV armchairs by Cresson are expected to fetch US $ 340,000. Overall the sale should realise some US $ 2,5 million.
