Some 283 ceramic pieces dating from the fifth Century B.-C. seized by French customs some 18 years ago were surrendered to Italy on November 23rd 1999. These pieces had been stolen from archaeological sites in Arpi, Canosa and Lavello in Southern Italy. They had been seized in Eastern France when French customs searched a vehicle with Italian plates. The hoard, including vases, small statuettes and bowls, will be transferred to the Palazzo Massimo in Rome where they will be carefully catalogued before being sent to various museums.
