The Jewish cemetery in the Lido area in Venice, one of the oldest burial sites in Europe, has been reopened on October 13th 1999 after a US $ 450,000 restoration campaign. The cemetery was created in 1386 after that of Worms in 1100 but had stood in ruins after the first half of the 18th Century. Some 1 200 tombstones have been recorded so far.
