NATTIER RETROSPECTIVE
01 November 1999

The first retrospective exhibition of the works of Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) held at the Versailles Palace is due to last until January 30th 2000.

Nattier was wrongly regarded as a superficial painter during his lifetime and this exhibition, with 80 works shown to visitors, is aimed at reversing such judgement.

Nattier was in fact a great portrait painter who represented many members of the French court or famous personalities. He started his career as a painter of historical subjects but was more a virtuoso when it came to reproduce the features of his sitters with vivid effects.

The works of Nattier also shown at the Château of Chantilly until January 31st 2000.
