The renovation of the Russian Museum of Saint Petersburg will last until the year 2008 at a cost of US $ 217 million. The Mikhailovsky Palace housing a great part of the Museum was renovated a century ago and is in need of extensive modernising works. Meanwhile, the Stroganov Palace, an adjoining building, is in derelict condition, notably its marble façade. Mural paintings, covered under the Soviet rule when the building became the Lenin Museum, have been rediscovered.
