Gérard Legrand, a close collaborator of André Breton, died from cancer at 72 in Paris on December 3rd 1999. After meeting Breton in 1948 he worked as the latter's assistant during 15 years and wrote two biographies, including «André Breton and his time» in 1967.
Legrand took part in all the major activities of the Surrealist group between 1949 and 1969 and contributed much to promote the image of Surrealism in France and abroad.
Known as a keen philosopher Legrand published many interesting poems and headed the «Coupure» magazine between 1969 and 1972.
Also a great cinema-fan, he published the «Age du Cinéma» review between 1951 and 1952 and worked for the «Positif» newssheets during the 1960's.
Legrand wrote many articles on modern painting, notably on Giorgio de Chirico and Toyen in 1976 as well on several Surrealist artists.
