OPENING OF THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM IN BILBAO
01 November 1997

Conceived by American architect Franck Gehry, the new Guggheim museum in Bilbao has opened on October 18th in Bilbao.
The Basque city has now a spectacular museum devoted to XXth century art with works from the Salomon Guggenheim of New York and those acquired thanks to a US $ 50 million grant paid by the Basque authorities. The building, entirely covered with shining titanium sheets, is one of the greatest futuristic achievements in Europe and his poised to attract thousands of visitors in Spain's fourth largest cities.
Looking like a modernistic cathedral, the museum has a 145 metre-long gallery destined for temporary exhibitions. Meanwhile, the museum has already acquired works by Willem de Kooning, Cliffor Still, Mark Rothko, Sigmar Polke, Richard Serra, Francisco Clemente, Txomin Badiola, Prudencio Irazabal, Juan Luis Moraza, Francesco Torres and Jim Dine.
