A self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo sold for a world record bid of $ 5 million at Sotheby's on May 31st 2000 in New York. The sale devoted to South American artists registered also some good prices such as a bid of $ 566,750 for “Woman washing” by Angel Zarraga. Two works by Matta, “The Initiation” and “Hungry woman” sold respectively for $ 555,750 and 324,750 while “Cuatro Mujeres” by Columbian painter Fernando Botero went for $ 511,750 and “ Sleepwalker” by Rufino Tamayo fetched $ 291,750.
