Sotheby's fared somewhat well for their sale of contemporary art paintings which totalled US 42,2 million on November 17th 1998 in New York. Works by Basquiat, notably Untitled and Rubber, sold respectively for US $ 717,500 and $ 420,000 while 27 paintings by Dubuffet, Picasso, Klee and Miro froml the Morton Neumann family collection went for a total of US $ 17,6 million. Ocean View by Richard Diebenkorn was sold for a record US $ 3,9 million against a top pre-sale estimate of $ 2 million. Andy Warhol's four Marilyn fetched US $ 2,3 million but a white monochrome, White Numbers, by Jasper Johns remained unsold at US $ 6 million.
On November 12th 1998 Christie's registered US $ 9,2 million for a sale of contemporary paintings. A painting by British artist Damien Hirst, Diazepam, went for US $ 88,300 while a work
by American artist Robert Gober, Untitled (Man in Drain) showing thebody of a man behind the railings of a sewer, was sold for a record US $ 552,500. Another work by Gober, The Flying Sink representing a giant urinal in wood and plaster was sold for US $ 508,500 on November 17th by Sotheby's which also recorded a record price of US $ 189,500 for Charles Ray with Rotating Circle showing a simple circle…
