STORMING BIDS AT DROUOT-MONTAIGNE

Many strong bids were recorded between June 7th and 9th 2000 at Drouot-Montaigne in Paris with the Briest group recording an overall turnover of 63 million FF (US 9,2 million) for modern and contemporary paintings and works of art.

The atmosphere in the salesroom was somewhat in the salesroom since a world record price for Spanish artist Oscar Dominguez and a dozen bids over $ 145,000 were registered during the three-day sale.

Oscar Dominguez's «Infernal Machine», an oil on canvas of 1937 measuring 92 x 73 cm went for 2 770 000 FF ($ 404,375) (inclusive of buyer's premium) against a pre-sale estimate of 450 000 FF, Hans Hartung's «T 1947 26 B» of 1947, an oil painting measuring 97 x 146 cm fetched 1 550 000 FF ($ 226,275) (inclusive of buyer's premium) and Henri le Sidaner «le Café du Port», a 1923 canvas work measuring 140 x 93 cm sold for 2 215 000 FF ($ 323,350) (inclusive of buyer's cost).

Other significant results were recorded for Marcoussis' «Two figures and marine anchor» of 1930, which fetched 750 000 FF ($ 109,485), Gino Severeni's «La Ciociara», a rare collage, which sold for 1 600 000 FF ($ 233,575), Albert Marquet's «Fenêtre ouverte sur le port de Boulogne», an oil on canvas dated 1919, which went for 1 660 000 FF ($ 242,330), Leopold Survage's «vase au camelia et à l'oiseau», which was acquired for 650 000 FF ($ 94,890), Henri Lebasque's «Madame Lebasque in her garden», an oil on canvas of circa 1895, which was bought for 1 300 000 FF ($ 189,780), Henri Martin's «Houses in the countryside», which reached 900 000 FF (US $ 131,385) and Louis Valtat's «Woman and children in a garden in Agay», an oil on canvas of circa 1909, which culminated at 850 000 FF ($ 124,085).

In the field of bronze sculptures, Max Ernst's «Personnage» fetched 1 200 000 FF ($ 175,180) and Pablo Gargallo's «Maternity» went for 480 000 FF ($ 70,070) while two terracotta vases painted by Marc Chagall and titled «Vierge à l'enfant» and «Péché originel» sold respectively for 650 000 FF ($ 94,850) and 400 000 FF
($ 58,390).

As for contemporary paintings, Miguel Barcelo was the star of the show with a 1989 painting titled «La Plaque N°2», which sold for 1 500 000 FF ($ 218,975).
Jean Dubuffet's «Paysage au sol» went for 920 000 FF ($ 134,305), Pierre Soulages' «Peinture, 27 mai 1989» fetched 580 000 FF ($ 84,670) and Simon Hantaï's «Composition without title» of 1973 reached 530 000 FF ($ 77,370).
