AMERINDIAN ART AT THE GRAND PALAIS IN PARIS
01 April 2000

Precolumbian gold and ceramic artworks are being shown at the Grand Palais in Paris until July 10th 2000.
These works from the Museum of Columbian Gold in Bogota provide a much interesting insight on the art of past civilisations in Columbia and their beliefs in religious ritual practices. However such exhibition only gives an overall feeling to visitors and does not make any distinction between the various cultures (Tairona, Sinu, Muisca or Narino) between eight and twenty centuries ago.

The lack of information regarding the provenance of gold, the way it was used and the types of ceramics and their dates of production is another bad point for this exhibition in the opinion of several specialists especially as visitors know little about precolumbian art. Ignorant they are and ignorant they remain after seeing so many magnificent pieces meaning that museums organising such events have still a lot to do to in order to reach the public in a suitable way.
