Paris auctioneers registered a total turnover of 2,66 billions francs inclusive of premiums (US $ 436,655 millions)
(2,4 billions francs without premiums) during 1997.
This result showed a 15% increase compared with 1996 though only ten works of art sold over 5 millions francs
(US $ 820,000) including a pastel by Degas which fetched
25 millions FF (US $ 4,100,000) and an oil painting by Gauguin which was bought at 24 millions francs (US $ 3,933,333).
The only piece of furniture which sold over 5 millions francs was a commode by Adam Weisweiler which fetched 5,5 millions francs (US $ 908,000).
Paris remained far behind Christie's and Sotheby's which will be allowed to hold sales in the French capital in six months time. As a result, both houses might provoke a substantial fall in the turnover of Drouot for 1998.
