Estimate: 20,000—30,000 EUR Lot Sold. Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium: 36,000 EUR DESCRIPTION: the central section of a winged altar, with openwork and tracery-carved predella below, restorations
The relief shows the Pentecost or the Descent of the Holy Ghost. The apostles returned to Jerusalem after witnessing the Ascension of Christ. Ten days later, on the day of the feast of Pentecost, ' ...there appeared to them flames of fire, dispersed among them and resting on each one ...'(Acts 2:1-4). The theme is rare in Christian art after the Middle Ages. The twelve apostles, the place of Judas taken by Matthias, the Virgin Mary and occasionally other holy women comprise the scene in which all are at prayer with the Virgin who sits in a central position, personifying the Church.
