each of slightly waisted form on an everted foot, with sloping shoulder, short cylindrical neck and everted mouth, decorated in cobalt blue and overglaze lustre, the body with four large lotus-form palmettes on blue stems alternating with stylised five-leaf palmettes painted in lustre against a background of large feathery leaves and foliate tendrils, the neck with pairs of blue palmettes and leaves painted in lustre, each with old inventory mark(?) 5069 PMS[or PM5?]BMR ... in blue paint on the base. A number of jars with comparable decoration are known, including two in the Victoria and Albert Museum (acc. nos.32-1907 and 33-1907; see Ray 2000, nos.168 and 169, p.80, col. pl.18), and others in the Cloisters Collection, Metropolitan Museum, New York, the Museo Capodimonte, Naples, the Instituto Valencia de don Juan, and the British Museum.

with slightly raised centre and straight sloping sides, painted in cobalt blue and overglaze lustre with a central shield with a blue border enclosing an eagle with spread wings looking to the right, the sides of the interior with exuberant palmette scrolls in lustre alternating with stylised rosettes in blue, the back with a monumental heraldic eagle looking to the right displayed on a ground of stylised flowerheads and leaves, the rim drilled twice for suspension. of deep form on a flat base with moulded gadrooned sides and gadrooned rim, decorated in cobalt blue and overglaze lustre with a central shield enclosing an eagle facing left, enclosed by narrow concentric bands of stylised flowerheads, trellis pattern and foliate scrolls, similar motifs are repeated on the sides of both the interior and exterior and on the rim, the underside of the rim with loose feathery leaves, the base with alternating wide and narrow concentric lines in lustre
The arms are probably those of Atienda, of Aragon.
The deep form is rarer than the shallow dish, though both ultimately derive from metal prototypes. A comparable deep dish was sold in these rooms, 7 October 1948, lot 149, as part of the Beit Collection, and another from the Gutzwiller Collection, formerly in the Collections of Frederick the Great and William Randolph Hearst, sold 12/13 December 1996, lot 126.

The combination of cobalt blue and copper-red lustre is rare in fifteenth-century Spanish pottery. An attribution to Manises in Valencia has been suggested, though it may be the work of Valencian craftsmen who had emigrated to Catalonia. This jar may be of the type described as pots blaus regalats ("pots melted with blue") in a document of 1449 (see Ray 2000, p.89)
