Stolen Rembrandt returned to Adolphe Schloss' heirs
01 June 2002

The Czech government has handled over a painting by Rembrandt stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War to the their rightful owners, the heirs of Jewish collector Adolphe Schloss, it was learned in Paris on June 25th 2002.

Czech culture minister Pavel Dostal handed over Rembrandt's portrait of a Jew wearing a fur hat during a visit to Paris.

The Nazis, who plundered most Jewish art collections in Europe during the war, spent months hunting the famous Schloss collection, which had been well hidden in South-West France. It was only after receiving a tip-off from some French collaboratorionists that they managed to seize it. The collection included many 16th and 17th Century Dutch and Flemish masterpieces. Up to now, several works have remained unaccounted for.
