His career includes painting, sculpture and video, as well as installations. Since 1995, Lars Nilsson is professor of Visual Arts at Malmo Art Academy, Lund University. Lars Nilsson's work has been exhibited at PS1 Museum, New York, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, among others, and most recently, Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena.
After Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall the exhibition will travel to the newly opened Site de Creation Contemporaine, Palais de Tokyo, Paris.
Lars Nilsson's autobiographical project, which began in 1994, deals with the fascination for contradictory subjects such as luxury consumption, gender theory, explicit sex and surrealist art, within a body politic in which the darkest areas of human nature form a gloomy backdrop. At the intersection of these subjects emerges the unique charge, which characterises Lars Nilsson's art, through the disturbing interaction between beauty and repulsiveness. The mix blurs the border between image and reality in an uncanny way. Lars Nilsson's investigation into, and "exposure" of, his own mind also entails that the most vulnerable aspects of his self are sometimes disclosed. Encountering his art, the viewers can examine themselves by looking into their own deeply rooted reactions.
