A special squad has been formed in Budapest to combat art thefts in Hungary after the pillaging of many churches, private collections and archaeological sites. Art thefts have doubled after the fall of the Communist regime in Hungary. They numbered over 1,000 in 1997 however much less than in Czechoslovakia which registered 6,000 art objects stolen.
Only 10% of objects and paintings stolen have so far been recovered. Happily all the objects stolen from the Jewish Art Museum of Budapest were found intact in a village near Bucharest, Romania.
