The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, USA is to inaugurate an exhibition titled “The Triumph of French Painting: Masterpieces from Ingres to Matisse” due to last until January 6th 2002.
The exhibition features works drawn from the world-renowned collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore. Representing French art from neo-classicism to impressionism, fauvism, and modernism, this magnificent exhibition surveys a triumphant age in art history.
More than 50 major works by celebrated artists such as Ingres, Corot, Delacroix, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, van Gogh, Picasso, and Matisse are included.
The exhibition is currently being presented at the Royal Academy of Art in London, England, before concluding with its visit to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. The exhibition has received critical accolades in each of its previous engagements. “At the end of this wonderful show, you might think The Triumph of French Painting is just about the perfect exhibition.It draws us into its beauty, the mystery and glory of art,"said Matt Schudel of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The Triumph of French Painting is yet another banner exhibition being offered by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery that is a not-to-be missed experience for both serious and casual art fans, said Douglas G. Schultz, director of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
These paintings comprise a survey of some of the great art of 19th and early 20th centuries in France, the centre of the art world during that period. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase this dramatic selection of still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and history paintings by many esteemed French masters”, he stressed.
“This superb exhibition of works is the next in our line of banner exhibitions, following the tremendously successful Monet at Giverny exhibition in 1999 and the James Tissot exhibition last year, as well as other popular shows we have presented in recent years”, Schultz said. “We once again invite people not only from the Buffalo Niagara area but also Southern Ontario, Pennsylvania, and the Great Lakes Region to visit the Gallery to see this exhibition, as well as our outstanding permanent collection”, he added.
