RECORD FOR FRIDA KAHLO PAINTING
01 June 2000

A self-portrait by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo sold for a record US $ 5 million on May 31st 2000 at Sotheby's in New York.

This price was the highest ever paid for a South American painting on the art market. The previous record for a painting by Kahlo (1907-1954), a self-portrait with a monkey and a parrot, «Autoretrato con macaco y loro», stood at $ 3,2 million.
It had been acquired in 1995 by Argentinian collector Eduardo Constantini.
