EXIBITIONS IN BUDAPEST
01 November 2000

As part of the Fall festival, several exhibitions have been inaugurated in Budapest in , notably on Catalan Art, the photos of Jindrich Streit, a Czech photographer and American works.

The exhibition of Jindrich Streit, titled «Sand» is taking place at the Budapest Gallery until November 26th . Streit is expressing via photographs the contradictions of the computer revolution and globalisation. His photographs show a disappearing world with people unable to adapt to new technologies.

In 1982 Streit was accused of outrage against the Czech Republic and received a 44-month prison sentence. His photos and camera were confiscated by police.

The exhibition on Catalan art, titled «Before Miro after Dali», has been inaugurated at the Hungarian National Gallery. Visitors can admire some dazzling masterpieces by Antoni Gaudi, Picasso, Joan Miro, Antoni Tapies, Dali or Julio Gonzales.

Catalan masters played a major role in the development of 20th Century modern art in many fields. For example, modernism expressed by Gaudi, Rusinol, Gimeno, Camarasa, Picasso, Nonell or Miro epitomised the efforts of the Catalan people. Still, most of them expressed their talents outside Spain. This exhibition will continue in Spain from November 26th.

The exhibition devoted to American art, titled «Eden Illusion» and shown at the Ludwig Museum until November 26th, deals with the Midwest and the birth of the American dream. Visitors will discover paintings, photos and graphic works produced between the two World Wars.

This event offers an interesting insight on provincial life in America far away from foreign influences. However, most artists limited themselves to offering a realistic vision of what they saw at least until the 1929 crisis. After that William S. Schwartz, Thomas Hart Benton, Dale Nichols, Johan Stuart Curry or Joe Jones however kept representing the Midwest in a traditional manner.
