Directors of the reunion of French Museums have been accused of procrastination regarding works of art under their care which had been seized by the Nazis during the last war and then recovered by allied troops. The «Cour des Comptes», an official body supervising all State institutions regarding the way these are run, stigmatised the attitude of Museum officials who did little to try to find the legal owners of these works of art, mostly Jewish families victims of the Holocaust, in order to give them back to them or their heirs.
A total of 1955 paintings and objects have been in the care of the Louvre and Orsay museums for over 50 years and among these are treasures that curators would obviously like to add to the collections of these institutions. The fact that museum officials and their successors have remained silent for so long a time might be interpreted as a lack of will to hand over these priceless pieces.
