the Old pretender (1688-1760), on vellum laid down on card, rectangulat gilt-wood frame with foliate and pierced border
Christie's London. A surprising bid for this miniature by an unknown French artist, which carried a modest £ 2,000 to 3,000 pre-sale estimate. It was the representation of this prestigious sitter, Prince James, the Pretender to the English throne, which made such a big difference rather than the sheer quality of this miniature.
