MAN RAY A CURA DELLA FONDAZIONE MAZZOTTA
Man Ray exhibition in Italy

The 1998 Autumn-Winter exhibition at the Mazzotta Foundation Fondazione Mazzotta (www.milanoweb/mazzotta/) is dedicated to yet another of the masters of 20th Century art, Man Ray, in a retrospective made possible thanks to the now regular assistance of the Cultural Department of the Province of Milan and to the support of the Fondazione CARIPLO.

This American, Man Ray (Philadelphia 1890 - Paris 1976), is one of the most radical and eclectic representatives of Dadaism and surrealism. He came into contact with avant-garde art circles in New York thanks to the celebrated photographer, Alfred Stiegliz. There he visited the 291 Gallery, the Armory Show in 1913, met Marcel Duchamp and started to paint and develop a taste for experimenting with new forms achieving innovative results with the aerograph, with photographic film and with the manipulation of every day objects which he called "objects of affection".

He moved to Paris in 1921 and produced his first rayogrammes there the following year, one of the most extraordinary inventions of the 20th Century. They are images obtained from photosensitive material without the use of lenses or cameras or the mediation of a negative, created by placing objects directly in contact with photographic emulsion.

A chance discovery, "A sheet of photosensitive paper had accidentally ended up in the developing tank", as he himself put it in his autobiography. His elegant "solarisations", which produce a sort of magic aura around the subject, appeared in theyears that followed. In the meantime, Man Ray opened a genuine photographic studio in the heart of Montparnasse and started to do work for Vanity Fair, Vogue and Harpers Bazaar.

This was the period of his fashion photography and numerous portraits of painters, sculptors, poets, dancers, models and high society personalities. Man Ray the photographer?

In the catalogue Lucien Treillard says, "No, he used photography as just another means of expression, pencil, gouache, oils, etc.." He created works of art with the aid of the photographic medium.

Man Ray is an artist and he himself insists on the right to that label. Certainly he has done commercial work in fashion or for occasional clients, but in his hands photography often becomes a "work of art". In addition to his rayogrammes, photographs and drawings, his work also includes a set of objects impregnated with surrealist humour and poetry which may be considered genuine icons of later Object Art.

The creative and restless spirit of this man with the curious name (his real name was in fact Emannuel Radnitzky) is illustrated at the Mazzotta Foundation in an exhibition containing over 500 works - ranging from the masterpieces to his lesser known drawings - covering all the periods of his artistic life and all types of works. The Mazzotta publishing house is producing an extensive catalogue of the exhibition with texts by Timothy Baum, Giorgio Marconi, Arturo Schwartz and Lucien Treillard, reproductions of all the works in the exhibition and numerous writings of the artist never before published. A small book is also being published for children written by Cristina Cappa Legora and illustrated with the most representative of Man Ray's works.
