SEX IN ART

Sex in art was a theme much used during Greek and Roman times when taboos
had almost no borders. Painters and sculptors then felt free to express their talents
in order to create incredible works.
Suggestive Greek potteries or Roman wall frescoes found in archaeological sites
like Pompeii or Herculaneum notably give us today a clear idea about the way
Romans considered sex, simply with a natural and much free attitude in these times.

Still, historians during the 19th Century were much inclined to state that the Romans were depraved thus tending to forget that they were above all used to celebrating the cult of love via many gods and goddesses.
Many lustful sculptures, friezes, works of art and paintings were produced in Greece and in the Roman Empire during several centuries until Christianity ruled the world
and went on to impose strict moral values.

The Church regarded sex as a sin, mainly as a cause of depravity as well as the expression of paganism and it was not until the Renaissance period, after the
discovery of antique statues in Rome and other parts of Italy, that artists
eventually tackled daringly the subject of sex through mythological themes.
