sales returned strong sold rates and healthy results as new and established
clients, many of whom were private collectors, bid in the room, by telephone
and through the internet. Appealing estimates attracted significant interest
and bidding and drove many prices to levels far above pre-sale expectations. Rare
and market fresh works were particularly sought after as illustrated by Giorgio
de Chirico's Il trovatore which sold
for £481,250 against a pre-sale estimate of £200,000 to £300,000, and we were
pleased to see Pablo Picasso's Tete de
femme realise £313,250 having last been sold at Christie's in June 2005 for
£181,600."
