Christie's 4 December sale
of Fine printed books and manuscripts realized a total of 5,425,625
USD achieving 75% by lot and 81% by value with Albert Einstein's letter on God sold for 2,892,500 USD,a new world auction record for a letter by the celebrated scientist achieved after a four-minute
bidding battle between two clients on the phones.
The bid was won by Books and
Manuscripts Senior Specialist, Christina Geiger. Other great results in the
Fine Printed Books & Manuscripts sale were achieved for a collection of
original printing blocks for the first editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland which
fetched 81,250 USD against an estimate of 20,000-30,000 while Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of
Natural Selection went for 162,500 USD and the rare true first
edition of Harry Potter
and the Philosopher's Stone achieved a world auction record for Harry
Potter and more than doubled its high estimate realizing a similar price.
