CHRISTIE'S SALE OF MODERN BRITISH ART YIELDED 26,38 MILLION GBP IN LONDON

Christie's sale of Modern British Art yieled 26.387 million GBP with 94% of the 48 lots sold marking a 30% rise over last year's total.

The top lot was Henry Moore's unique carving Head which sold for4,621,250 GBP while sculptures by Barbara Hepworth,Lynn Chadwick and Barry Flanagan were among the top ten lots.  Barry Flanagan's Nijinski Hare went for 1,448,750 GBP, a fine result for the artist , Kenneth Armitage's Striding Figures (version 2) sold for 218,750, Emily Young's Cautha registered a record 344,750 GBP, Barbara Hepworth's Tiki fetched 1,808,750 GBP, Lynn Chadwick's Jubilee IV rose to 2,024,750 GBP and Khan by William Turnbull achieved 692,750 GBP.

Bridget Riley's Shadow Rhythm sold for  1,628,750 GBP at twice its high estimate of £800,000. Frank Auerbach's  London street scene Mornington Crescent Looking South II made 608,750 GBP, Sir Stanley Spencer's Portrait of Kate Morrell  went for 536,750, David Hockney's Two Pink Flowers realized a similar price and Pauline Boty's Portrait of Derek Marlowe with Unknown Ladies achieved 248,750 GBP.

Samuel John Peploe's Still Life with Tulips fteched 992,750 GBP, Sean Scully's M.18.04 sold for 488,750, more than three times its estimate, and  the Taiwanese-born Richard Lin's paintings fared quite well with  Painting relief 1965-66  sold for 236,750 GBP, September 1974-79  which went for 344,750 and Stripes 1968-70 bought for 272,750 GBP.
