ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE DESTROYED IN ALBANIA
01 September 1997


The archaeological site of Butrint in Albania has been almost completely destroyed during the upheavals in this country in March 1997. The collections of the Butrint museum have been pillaged while the archaeological site has been left in wrecks. Statues have been stolen and mosaics destroyed. Founded by the Greeks, Butrint was famous for its Roman, Byzantine and mediaeval ruins.
