Stockholm's new modern art museum has opened on February 12th 1998 on the site of the former maritime castle of Skeppsholmen overlooking the historical town centre. The old museum was the target of a spectacular theft in 1994 during which several masterpieces by Picasso and a major work by Braque were stolen.
