HAMMERSHØI RESDISCOVERED IN FRANCE
01 December 1997

Several works by Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) were rediscovered by the French public during an exhibition at the Orsay Museum held until March 1st 1998.

Hammershøi, who painted many intimate interior scenes, was well-known in Scandinavia but not much in France. Much acclaimed by his contemporaries, including German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, this artist impregnated his works with some delicate atmosphere. His interiors are clean, well-lit but somewhat austere and colourless and reflect the quiet Scandinavian lifestyle of that time.
