FALL FOR CHRISTIE'S ART SALES IN 2008 Christie's International, the world's leading art business, announced on February 12, 2009 that its 2008 art sales totalled £2.8 billion/$5.1 billion*. The results reflect an 11% decrease in £ (19% decrease in $) over 2007 sales against the difficult global economic backdrop. The results were achieved through more than 600 sales in 14 saleroom locations worldwide and include auction premiums as well as private sales of £267.6 million/$487.0 million. For the year, Christie's sold a total of 629 works of art at auction for over $1 million each. Link
HIGH PRICE FOR A TER BRUGGEN PAINTING A 1624 painting on canvas representing a bagpipe player in profile by the Dutch artist Hendrick Ter Bruggen (1588-1629) fetched 10,162,000 USD (Buyer's premium included) against a high estimate of 6 million USD during a sale held by Sotheby's on January 29th 2009 in New York. CHRISTIE'S SALE OF IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN ART IN LONDON The Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale
took place at Christie's on February 4, 2009 in London realized
£63,428,750 / $91,210,543 / €70,088,769. The top price of the evening
was paid for Claude Monet's Dans la Prairie, 1876, which
was exhibited at the seminal third Impressionist Exhibition in 1877 and
which sold at this evening sale for £11,241,250 / $16,164,918 /
€12,421,581. At this evening's auction, 4 works of art sold for over £5
million / 16 over £1 million. Buyers (by lot / by origin) were 18% UK,
54% Europe not including UK, 26% Americas and 2% Asia. Link

good doctor Paul Ferdinand Gachet (1828-1929) whom Van Gogh painted in 1890 a
famous portrait sold in New York a century later at an incredible price of $ 80
million was not a reliable man according to the artist whereas history would
tend to suggest that he took advantage of his brief relationship with the
