MAFFEI FRANCESCO

(1600?-1660)
Nationality: Italian
Activity: Painter
Average rate: Between $ 8,000 and 28,000

Maffei first studied with Maganza in Vicence, period during which he painted the «Saint Vincent» work now in the museum of that town as well as a «Saint Nicolas and the Angel» in 1626.

He then went to Venice and worked with Sante Peranda. He also frequented Strozzi and painted under the influence of Venetian colourists of the 16th Century producing fantasy scenes.

Maffei returned to Vicence where he produced most of his paintings as well as decorative works for the Podesta Palace and for the cathedral notably.

This artist also painted many mythological scenes for ceilings in a baroque style before going to Padua around 1657. Considered as a strange artist who underwent the influences of Tintoretto and Veronese his role in the Venetian school has yet to be established as no serious studies has been made regarding his work.
