Gimmi went in 1908 to France and studied during three years at the Académie Julian.
He was much impressed by Masaccio and Piero della Francesca during a visit in 1911 to Italy and developed his own style under the influence of Cézanne in France. He exhibited his works for the first time in 1919 at the Salon d'Automne along with Bonnard, Matisse and Marquet and stayed in France until 1940.
Gimmi painted portraits and landscapes near Paris as well as bar and cabaret scenes before taking to mural paintings during the second part of his career in Switzerland. He was awarded the Zurich Grand Prix of painting in 1962.
