GILLRAY JAMES
(1758-1815) Nationality: British Activity: Sketcher and engraver Average rate: Between $ 10,000 and 15,000 Gillray studied drawing at the Royal Academy and engraving under Ryland. He first produced portraits and scenes before turning to caricatures.
He produced some 1200 caricatures as well as numerous anti-French satirical illustrations, which were published by Mrs Humphrey, especially during the French Revolution and worked until 1811.
Gillray was a heavy drinker and became almost insane before he committed suicide in 1815 in London.
