Son of Newell Convers Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth was born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvani, in 1917 and worked mainly as a traditional painter however imbued with much talent. He exhibited his works several times at the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh after becoming known at 20 with his illustrations of Robin Hood.
Wyeth lived in Chadds Ford in Pennsylvania and spent his summers in Cushing, Maine. He was above all inspired by the landscapes surrounding these spots to paint scenes showing some kind of emptiness and people expressing solitude and nostalgia.
Wyeth painted his works with minute touches and his paintings almost resemble photographies. He once was the most expensive American artist, notably during the 1960s, though he was at least 13 years younger than Mark Rothko or Willem de Kooning, the great exponent of abstract expressionist painting. Strangely enough his painting appeared to be fifty years older than theirs.
