Westall William
(1781-1850) Nationality: British Activity: Painter and engraver Average price : Between $ 7,000 and 120,000 (for works produced in Australia) Brother and pupil of Richard Westall, he also studied at the Royal Academy before joining an explatory expedition to Australia at 19.
After surviving a shipwreck off the Australian coast he was saved by a ship sailing to China. He thus had the opportunity of visiting that country and went to Bombay and other parts of India before returning to England in 1805. During his voyage back he was again saved from drowning.
Westall exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and the British Institution until 1849 and also became a member of the Old Water Colour Society in 1811 but resigned the following year. He produced many topographical watercolours during his career before dying in an accident.
