Werve Claus de
(1380-1439) Nationality: Flemish Activity: Sculptor Claus de Werve succeeded his uncle Claus Sutter and achieved his works at the Carthusian monastery of Champmoi from 1396. He reportedly produced the Weepers of the tomb of Philippe Le Hardi (1364-1404) after the drawings of Sluter who died in 1406.
Claus Werve took over Sluters studio and continued to adapt his style in numerous sculptures after becoming the official sculptor of the Duke of Burgundy.
He worked during five years to finish the tomb of Phillipe Le Hardi (The Bold) while in 1411 Jean Sans Peur( John without Fear) asked him to execute his own tomb but de Werve did not manage to carry out such work.
The altar piece of the church of Bessey-les-Citeaux, started in 1430, was attributed to him. Claus was certainly a great sculptor but lacked the talent of his uncle.
