Jan was the pupil of his father Jan-Baptist and received a solid background before tackling genre scenes.
He was much successful as a still life artist notably with returns from the hunt, which were much sought in the 1660s.
Jan Weenix belonged to the Guild of Utrecht between 1664 and 1668 and then worked for the Elector Palatine Jan Wilhelm at the Castle of Benberg. Weenix was mainly a painter of decors but produced some exquisite small formats. After the death of the Elector he went back to Amsterdam and continued to produce game still lifes. His best works are in the Louvre Museum, the National Gallery of London, The Hague Museum and the Amsterdam Museum.
